Plaque and root diseases
Plaque
Plaque is no more than calcified deposits. In our mouths, even with devoted care, plaque forms continually; the extracted and built up mineral matter from our saliva combine to form a hardened layer - plaque - on the teeth, including on dentures. Plaque contains a large number of bacteria and is thus particularly dangerous. There are two types of plaque; plaque which forms above the gums (supragingival) and that which forms below the gums (subgingival).
The latter type is invisible and can only be removed by a dentist with special tools. If plaque is ignored it can lead to gum disease and even to the loss of teeth. In addition, it causes discoloured, yellowed teeth and is also largely responsible for the unpleasant smell in the mouth. It is advisable to remove accumulated plaque every six months.
Removing plaque
At the Divinus dental surgery plaque is removed using the most up-to-date methods - including the ultrasound depurator. This device operates by generating vibrations which have the effect of releasing high speed air bubbles, which then pop out the hard, fixed plaque. It is a completely painless and very speedy method and causes no damage to the teeth.
Periodontal (gum) diseases
Plaque is the most frequent cause of the development of gum (periodontal) diseases. If we do not remove plaque then the bacteria within it is able to spread at a remarkable rate, which represents a serious threat to the gums. It attacks and destroys the tissue around the teeth and the structure which holds the teeth in place (gum, bone and connecting tissue). A clear sign of gum disease is bleeding gums. Plaque which is not regularly removed will sooner or later cause an infection of the gums and their eventual destruction, which results in other wise healthy teeth loosening and falling out. In addition to this, infection of the gums causes the formation of pouches in the gum tissue which leads to the widespread development of bacillus which in turn leads to the formation of nodes. Then the circulatory system carries them around the body and they can cause illnesses in different organs. Moreover, they can play a role in premature birth since the bacteria can reach the womb. In order to prevent all this it is very important to visit the dentist twice a year, where, if necessary, the unwanted plaque can be removed from the teeth or the dentures.
